Qld: Barking dogs bite into owners finances

Owners of dogs caught barking more than six minutes an hour face fines under new Queensland
nuisance regulations which come into effect today.

Dog owners who fail to comply with a warning notice face minimum fines of $240 for
each breach of the regulation.

The new laws regulate everything from noise created by jet skis to nuisances caused
by excess dust, smoke, odour and light. On-the-spot fines will range from $120 to $480.

An Environmental Protection Agency spokesman says angry residents make thousands of
complaints a year to local governments and the EPA about other domestic animals.

Under the laws, noise from barking dogs will be restricted to six minutes an hour between
7am and 10pm, and to three minutes in any 30-minute period between 10pm and 7am.

The EPA spokesman says a two-month moratorium on fines will apply.
