Dateline: SINGAPORELast telegram. Stop.
Telegrams are now a thing of the past in this high-tech city-state, a Singapore telecommunications company spokesman said Wednesday.
Following a final message on March 30 _ wedding congratulations sent to India _ Singapore joined a growing list of countries without a telegram service, said Ivan Tan of SingTel.
Telegrams were offered here for over 100 years, with more than a million messages sent annually during the 1960s and 1970s, he said.
However, transmissions slowed to a trickle _ about 400 a month _ in recent years as Singapore aggressively harnessed new communications technology, Tan said.
Its citizens routinely rank among the world's most tech-savvy people with high Internet and mobile-phone use.
