NSW: Easter petrol price hike referred to ACCC
Sydney's 10-cent a litre Easter petrol price rise has been referred to the Australian
Competition and Consumer Commission.
Prices soared nationwide ahead of today's public holiday, prompting New South Wales
Fair Trading Minister JOHN WATKINS to refer the matter to the ACCC.
Mr WATKINS says nothing appears to be sacred to the petrol companies - not Easter,
not consumers and not families travelling on holidays.
Australian Institute of Petroleum executive director BRYAN NYE has welcomed the inquiry
and says claims of profiteering are unfounded.
A spokeswoman for the ACCC says action will be taken if there's any evidence of anti-competitive
behaviour.
But Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD says petrol prices are high because of high world oil prices.
