NSW: Police warn public to look out for fake collector
A man posing as a charity collector in Sydney's east has been ripping off unsuspecting donors.
Police are warning the public to look out for fake charity collectors after they received
reports a man was operating in Sydney's CBD, eastern suburbs and Bondi Beach under false
pretences.
The man claims to work for the AIDS Trust of Australia, is aged in his 20s and has
an English accent.
A police spokesman says the man was wearing a tag indicating he was collecting for
HIV/AIDS, and carried a white bucket with a red lid.
But police say official collectors wear a numbered vest, display a photo identification
badge, and carry a red bucket with a white lid that is fitted with security devices to
prevent unauthorised opening.
